Your Gut Isn’t Just for Digestion… It’s Running the Show on Your Hormones

Here’s the deal: your gut isn’t just about digestion. It controls hormones in a very roundabout way….

If your gut’s inflamed, leaky, or overrun with the wrong bacteria, your hormones pay the price. Estrogen, cortisol, thyroid, insulin all of it gets pushed out of whack.

Your gut microbiome actually helps your body regulate hormones. Certain bacteria metabolize estrogen so your body can get rid of the extra instead of recirculating it (think estrogen dominance). Others produce short-chain fatty acids (SCFA) that calm inflammation and support blood sugar balance. But when you’ve got SIBO, candida overgrowth, or H. pylori, that balance disappears and you end up with bloating, acne, PMS, or burnout that just won’t quit.

In Utah, I see it constantly, women from Salt Lake to Utah County (lol sorry I need this for keywords) chasing hormone fixes when the real issue is their gut. You can’t “balance” hormones in a system that’s fighting gut inflammation and nutrient malabsorption. If your digestion is off, your hormones are too. Period. (pun intended 🫡)

And don’t even get me started on fiber. Your bacteria need it to thrive. When you skip fiber for gut health or live on protein shakes and coffee, your microbes starve. That’s when leaky gut, poor detox, and low energy hit hard. Add in stress and our lovely Utah air quality, and your gut’s basically waving a white flag.

The fix isn’t a detox tea or another supplement stack. It’s getting back to the basics:
👉 Eat real food (fiber, veggies, fermented stuff).
👉 Run stool testing: know if you’ve got parasites, SIBO, or candida running the show.
👉 Support your liver’s detox pathways for gut health.
👉 Use digestive enzymes or probiotics when needed, not because TikTok said so.

Bottom line: your hormones won’t stabilize until your gut does. Start there.
